STEP TRAINEESHIPS

During the spring 2020 application period for STEP Traineeships, ELSA offers both "normal" on-site STEP Traineeship vacancies, which require physical presence throughout the Traineeship period, and online STEP Traineeship vacancies, which are done remotely from the Trainee's home office.

-

ON-SITE

On-site STEP Traineeships require the Trainee's physical presence throughout the Traineeship period. This may require the Trainee to relocate and travel internationally. Due to COVID-19, the successful execution of on-site STEP Traineeships depends on external variables and developments allowing international travel and normal human interaction.

-

Consequently, many of the on-site STEP Traineeships offered in spring 2020 start in late 2020 and/or have flexible dates, i.e. offer-holders may negotiate directly with the respective Traineeship Provider when it is suitable and possible to start in the applicable circumstances.

ELSA does not promote or encourage defying restrictions on international travel and social distancing.

-

ONLINE

Online STEP Traineeships are like "normal" on-site STEP Traineeships but they can be done remotely from a location of the Trainee's choice, e.g. the Trainee's home couch. Like on-site STEP Traineeships, online STEP Traineeships are supervised and the STEP Trainee receives mentoring and feedback from the Traineeship Provider throughout the Traineeship period.

-

During the spring 2020 application period, both fully online and flexible STEP Traineeships are available. In the case of the latter, the question of whether the STEP Traineeship at issue will be conducted as an on-site or online vacancy is subject to negotiation between the Trainee candidate and the Traineeship Provider directly.

WHO CAN APPLY?

Law students

STEP Traineeships are open for students, graduates and young lawyers who study or have studied law in university.

-

ELSA members

STEP is available for everyone who is a member of an ELSA Group (local or national). The membership is regulated by each local/national Group of ELSA.

-

If you are based in one of the 44 National Groups of ELSA, contact them directly about ELSA membership.

External Applicants

Cannot find your country in the above map of National Groups of ELSA? In case there is no ELSA Group in your country, you might be able to still apply for STEP Traineeships as an External Applicant.

-

You need to pay the External Application Fee of €25 via PayPal.

-

Write step.trainees@elsa.org for more information.

COVID-19

Can I apply despite the coronavirus?

During the spring 2020 application period for STEP Traineeships, ELSA offers both "normal" on-site STEP Traineeship vacancies, which require physical presence throughout the Traineeship period, and online STEP Traineeship vacancies, which are done remotely from the Trainee's home office.

-

The start dates of on-site STEP Traineeships are often negotiable directly between the Trainee candidates and the Traineeship Providers.

This way, the start of the on-site STEP Traineeships requiring physical attendance in the given location can be adjusted to the prevailing circumstances rather flexibly.

-

Additionally, certain on-site STEP Traineeships are offered flexibly online.

This means that the final decision whether a STEP Traineeship is conducted on-site or online is negotiated directly between the Trainee candidates and the Traineeship Providers.

This way, the execution method of the STEP Traineeship can be adjusted to the prevailing circumstances rather flexibly.

-

ELSA does not promote or encourage defying restrictions on international travel and social distancing.
